A Quick Rundown on Artificial Sweeteners

I’m sure you know that at AcesWay.com, we’re not fans of artificial sweeteners. Sure they may offer some benefits, like great taste without adding any calories, but are you aware of the negative side effects of these chemicals? Here is a quick review of the negative aspects of the most popular of the artificial sweeteners.

Aspartame – Quite possibly the most notorious artificial sweetener, aspartame is the combination of two amino acids and a third compound. The amino acids are phenylalanine and aspartic acid. The third ingredient is methanol, a chemical used to make paint strippers and formaldehyde. It is a colorless, flammable and poisonous liquid.

Even the seemingly harmless amino acids used in aspartame are not except from their own warnings. Normally aspartic acid would be fine, but when used in the making of aspartame, it acts as an excitotoxin, overstimulating nerve cells in the brain until they die. This can lead to degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

Individuals who suffer from phenylketoneuria are missing an enzyme which breaks down the amino acid phenylalanine. Too much phenylalanine in their diet can interfere with brain development. As such, you will see warnings on any product which contains phenylalanine.

Acesulfame Potassium – The sweetener is the combination of acetoacetic acid, fluorosulfonyl isocyanate, methylene chloride and potassium. Methylene chloride is a known carcinogen, which are agents directly involved in causing cancer.

Sucralose – Marketed as “Made From Sugar and Tastes Like Sugar,” sucralose is made by a chemical process in which sugar molecules are “washed” in chlorine, and this actually adds chlorine molecules to the sugar. In addition to the chlorine, other chemicals such as acetic anhydride and methanol are used. Sucralose consumption may lead to a greater risk for developing leukemia.

Other than the amino acids and sugar used in the beginning stages of these artificial sweeteners, the remaining ingredients are a group of toxic chemicals that humans were never supposed to be ingesting in the first place. One look at the side effects of these chemicals should be enough to keep anyone away from them, and it blows my mind that the FDA even allows their consumption.

Keep these chemicals out of your body and you will begin to notice positive changes from their elimination. A zero-calorie drink option just isn’t worth the other detrimental effects these chemicals could have on your health.
